Bird Feeder Update Week 1
During the past few weeks in Backyard Permaculture, we have developed a plan for implementing bird feeders on campus, and we have just started getting everything together. Our plan is to make several bird feeders to put around campus. One design we have planned consists of plastic drinking bottles and wooden spoons. We have also located several unused bird feeders in the hopes of refurbishing them and adding them to our project.
The goal of this project is to increase bird diversity at Appamada, and this would benefit the community. Birds contribute greatly to their environment, dispersing seeds and eating harmful insects. It would also provide educational opportunities for students to practice observational skills, and engage in nature. The tenant of permaculture that this project most engages with is “Produce no Waste” due to our use of reusing discarded materials.
We have scouted out possible locations to place our bird feeders, and have found around six places that would attract birds, and be a reasonable place to put a bird feeder. Two of these locations already have bird feeders that need to be cleaned and filled, and Ariel found a third one that we can use in another location. We are almost done with one of our bird feeders which has a wooden dowel for the birds to sit on, and a window so that they can access the seeds.
