Bird Feeder Update Week 3

Due to the cold weather and Parent Teacher Conferences, we haven’t been able to work on our project very much. On Tuesday I feed the mealworms and that’s about it since we don’t have school today.

This was a shorter week than usual, but we finished the first feeder and scoped out places to potentially put it. We wanted to put it somewhere close to the bluebird house so that bluebirds would be more drawn to the house. Hopefully we can put some bird seed in the feeder and hang it up next week!!  This week we bought and set up a blue bird nesting box. We are trying to attract blue birds. We also have mealworms to put in an attachable bowl for food. This is a picture of the feeder:

Last week Sydney and Ariel went to Wild Birds Unlimited to get some bird food and a bluebird house. We installed the bluebird house in the front yard near the gravel parking lot. Since it has been freezing for the past few days, I doubt that any birds are checking it out, but hopefully we will have birds nest there this season. We also got mealworms to feed the birds and I have started feeding them apples every Thursday.

Our plan is to make several bird feeders to put around campus. One design we have planned consists of plastic drinking bottles and wooden spoons. We have also located several unused bird feeders in the hopes of refurbishing them and adding them to our project.  The goal of this project is to increase bird diversity at Appamada, and this would benefit the community. It would also provide educational opportunities for students to practice observational skills, and engage in nature. The tenant of permaculture that this project most engages with is “Produce no Waste” due to our use of reusing discarded materials. We have scouted out possible locations to place our bird feeders, and have found around six places that would attra...

This is a link to our proposal for this school project: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1fELyqfviS0sCXt3OI3JWNcSPzwMMfYUjkY-W01xUaC8/edit#slide=id.p This week, we worked on the making of the bird feeders. We cut and drilled to develop the feeders. The idea of using a drill to make a hole to insert the perch was successful. We struggled cutting out the windows with an exacto knife, as the plastic of the water bottle we are using to make the feeder is hard to cut through. Our next steps are continuing to work on the making of the feeders. This is our feeder so far:
